Student Work: Large Portrait

Here's a recently finished work by one of our students. It's a really great painting. Done in oils and measuring 60x60 cm, it has a nice "loose" feel to it. There's definitely a kind of Mary Cassatt look to the work. This kind of brushy technique of representing things realistically can be really interesting.

The painting has a very "open form" kind of realism, meaning that there's an interplay between the figure and the background, without a really clear separation between the two in places. Essentially there are blurred, brushy edges and notes of the background colour woven through the face of the boy. It's an interesting way to create a harmony of colour and form in a work.
