Our classes

In this class, students will learn the principles and techniques needed to accurately draw in a realistic manner. Students will learn to draw from direct observation, not photographs. Through accurate observation and the correct application of line and tone, students will make drawings which convey a convincing sense of three-dimensional form.

Covered in the class:

  • Sighting angles, comparative measurement and alignment.
  • Blocking in: constructing flat linear relationships to serve as a foundation for drawing.
  • Shading: understanding how tone creates the appearance of light and form.
  • Technique: gaining proficiency with drawing materials for precision.
Progressing from the material covered in the introductory class, this module focuses on drawing increasingly complex objects and scenarios. Students will learn to accurately draw a variety of materials such as glass, metal, wood, flowers and fur. In addition, the use of both linear and atmospheric perspective will be covered.

Covered in the class:

  • Drawing complex forms, beginning with the study of sculpture casts.
  • Advanced study of light and shadow on various surfaces.
  • Texture: how to graphically represent a variety of materials in a believable way.
  • Perspective: creating convinving illusions of spatial depth in drawings.
The portraiture class covers all aspects of drawing a human face. Students will learn to use measuring, proportion and anatomical information to create accurate and realistic drawings from observation.

Covered in the class:

  • Using sighting methods to gauge size relationships and placement of features.
  • Proportion: the ideal proportions of the head.
  • Anatomy: basic anatomy of the skull and the various features of the face.

About the Drawing Program

Our drawing program is designed to teach the fundamental skills that are essential for every artist. Rooted in classical techniques, this program emphasizes observation, precision, and creativity, guiding students through a structured learning process.

What Students Will Learn

Students begin with the basics—understanding line, form, and proportion—while drawing from life, still life, and reference images. As they progress, they delve into more complex aspects such as anatomy, light, shadow, and perspective. Each exercise is aimed at developing their ability to translate what they see into accurate, expressive drawings. And if a student is interested to move on to painting, it’s absolutely vital for them to have some basic drawing skills.

Drawing Materials

In our drawing classes a variety of materials are used to help students explore different techniques, textures, and artistic expressions. These materials can be grouped into several categories based on their function and properties:

Graphite pencils are a foundational tool in drawing. They range in hardness from soft (B range, such as 6B, 4B) to hard (H range, such as 2H, 4H), with softer pencils producing darker, thicker lines and harder pencils creating lighter, finer lines. Graphite is often used for precise detail work, shading, and sketching.

Charcoal comes in different forms—sticks, pencils, and powdered form. It is softer than graphite and allows for deep blacks and bold contrasts, making it ideal for expressive, gestural drawing. Artists can create both delicate shading and dramatic tones with charcoal by smudging, blending, or erasing areas to create highlights.

Conte crayons are made from a mix of graphite or charcoal and a binder, and they offer a different texture than either material alone. Available in a limited palette (typically black, brown, and white), they are useful for figure drawing and sketching, offering both precision and smooth blending.

Soft and hard pastels are often used for more color-based drawing. Soft pastels provide vibrant, easily blended colors, while hard pastels allow for more control and fine lines. Oil pastels, which are waxier, give a different feel and can be layered to create rich textures.

Erasers such as kneaded erasers and rubber erasers are not just for correcting mistakes but are also used to create highlights or subtract material from a drawing. Blending stumps (tortillons) and cloths are used to soften and blend graphite, charcoal, or pastel marks to create smoother transitions and tones.
