Pastel Drawing

In this course, students will learn to create richly colourful artworks with chalk pastels. Our subjects will range from flowers and still life to people animals, and landscape. We will explore:

Materials and Tools

  • Variations in the types of chalk pastels.
  • Types of paper used with the medium.


  • Using blending, layering, and hatching within an artwork.
  • Material handling: using blending stumps, brushes, and water.

Colour and Value

  • Understanding colour range with pastels.
  • Creating volume and light through rendering.
  • Controlling colour with an understanding of hue, value, and chroma.
  • Impressionist and realist approaches to colour.

Subject Matter Specifics

  • How to use pastel to represent flowers, fur, skin, clouds, water etc.

Students will complete both exercises and finished artworks which put theory into practice. Students can expect to complete at least three finished pieces utilizing different types of paper, pastels, and application methods. Subject matter for these works can be chosen by the student.
